DC3 Local 546-M Scholarship Fund

Beginning in 2010, we are launching the Local 546M Scholarship Fund, to be administered by the Printing Industries Educational Fund (PIEF) based in Columbus. Up to $1,500 in scholarships are being offered each year. These scholarships are open to Local 546M members, their children and grandchildren. See below for a description of the Scholarship and Criteria.

Scholarship applications for 2010 must be received by February 28, 2010. Applications can be obtained from the Union Office or online by going to www.pianko.org and returned to the PIEF.

Scholarship Criteria

Name of Scholarship: Local 546M Scholarship Fund

Purpose of Scholarship: To provide scholarships to members of GCC/IBT Local 546M their children and grandchildren attending full-time an accredited college or for retraining of Local 546M members within the graphic arts industry.

A. College Scholarships

Eligible applicants: Applicants must be active members of GCC/IBT Local 546M or any successor organization, the son or daughter of an active or retired member of GCC/IBT Local 546M or any successor organization, or the grandson or granddaughter of an active or retired member of Local 546M or any successor organization.

The applicant must have been accepted and be registered to attend an accredited 2-year or 4-year college or university on a full-time basis before funds will be released.

Applicants can apply for the scholarship in any year of their undergraduate college career.

Proof of eligibility will be confirmed by the Local Union.

To receive a scholarship, applicants must complete the PIEF application form and supply ACT/SAT scores and high school transcripts. In addition, two written letters of recommendation are required (forms can be found online pianko.org/awsimages/studentapp.pdf; pianko.org/awsimages/recform.pdf; pianko.org/awsimages/personalstatement) and the applicant must submit a one-page written summary describing what goals they hope to achieve in the graphic communications industry through higher education.

Selected, potential recipients will be required to participate in a personal interview in March or April.

Criteria for Scholarship Award: Applicant will have graduated from high school in the top 20% of their class or have a cumulative 2.5 grade point average or better.

The successful applicant will have demonstrated: (1) strong academic achievement; (2) active community involvement; (3) a strong desire to work in the printing and graphic communications industry.* (Beginning in the 4th year of the scholarship's existence, scholarships will be considered for other fields of study, however, priority will be given to applicants pursuing studies in printing and graphic communications).

The award committee shall consider any written recommendations submitted on behalf of the applicant.

Where more than one applicant meets the criteria, the committee will also consider and give weight to: (a) whether the applicant's field of study is or will be in printing and graphic communications or other communications-associated technologies or fields. Priority will be given to individuals entering the printing and graphic imaging industry; (b) whether the applicant, his/her parent or grandparent was an active participant in the GCIU Local 546M Health & Welfare Fund or Educational Training and Retraining Trust during any period in the year 2003.

Award: The award shall be made annually prior to May 31st. The scholarship amounts and the number of scholarships offered in any given year will depend on the funds in the endowment as of December 31 of the previous year.

B. Retraining Scholarships

Eligible applicants: Applicants must be active members in good standing of GCC/IBT Local 546M or any successor organization.

The applicant must be enrolled in a training or retraining course or programme in the graphic arts industry or related programme at a recognized college or technical school (as determined by the PIEF and representatives of GCC/IBT Local 546M.)

Proof of eligibility will be confirmed by the Local Union.

To receive a scholarship, applicants must complete the PIEF application form. In addition, two written letters of recommendation are required (forms can be found online pianko.org/awsimages/studentapp.pdf; pianko.org/awsimages/recform.pdf; pianko.org/awsimages/personalstatement) and the applicant must submit a one-page written summary describing what goals they hope to achieve in the graphic communications industry through the proposed technical course.

Criteria for Scholarship Award: Applicant will have been employed in the graphic arts industry for a minimum of five (5) years.

The successful applicant will: (1) provide a letter from his/her employer confirming that the course or programme in which the applicant is enrolled will enable the applicant to advance within the Company or to be retrained for another job within the Company; (2) obtain letters from the employer, union or coworkers supporting the applicant's likely success in the course of study.

The award committee shall consider any written recommendations submitted on behalf of the applicant.

Where more than one applicant meets the criteria, the committee will give preference to: (a) applicants age 40 or over seeking to retrain in new technology or different job classifications; (b) applicants at risk of losing employment for which the proposed training would provide a new career path to employment.

Award: The scholarship amounts and the number of scholarships available will depend on the funds available in the endowment as of December 31 of the previous year. The Award Committee will consider applications for Retraining Scholarships during the twelve month period from June 1st to May 31st of each year, as determined by PIEF and GCC/IBT Local 546M.

Scholarship Amounts: A total of $1,500 per year will be available in scholarships for College Scholarships and Retraining Scholarships during a plan year. The number of scholarships to be awarded and the amounts of each individual scholarship will be determined on an annual basis by the Award Committee.

Award Committee: The Award Committee will consist of two (2) committee members appointed by the Printing Industries Educational Foundation (PIEF) and two (2) appointed by GCC/IBT Local 546M or its successor organization.

PIEF will deduct an amount from the fund to pay for the costs of marketing and required audits. Such amount shall be reasonable and shall be paid from the interest derived from the endowment and shall be shared proportionally between the PIEF funds. PIEF will provide GCC/IBT Local 546M annually with a copy of the audit.
