NEW PAGE Teamsters Represented Job Openings Teamsters District Council 3 holding annual meeting in Michigan (June 10-12, 2022)WARREN, Mich. (June 9, 2022) – Staff and Delegates who represent commercial and newspaper union members across six states will be attending the 2022 Teamsters District Council 3 Annual Meeting scheduled to start later today and run through Sunday. The 3-day meeting is being held at the offices of DC3 in Warren, Michigan.
“During these next couple days, (delegates) will hear reports on the state of our Union, future plans, issues happening in the units we have contracts with, and share information with each other,” Teamsters District Council 3 Secretary Treasurer Israel Castro said in a social media post earlier today. “Their role in ensuring that our District Council is prepared to defend our contracts and improve the conditions of our members is truly appreciated.” Also in attendance will be several guests including Graphic Communications Conference (GCC) Secretary Treasurer Steve Nobles who is the immediate past principal officer of DC 3 before being appointed in 2019, and later elected in 2020, for his current national GCC position stationed in Washington D.C. Internal and external organizing will be covered extensively during the Saturday afternoon session with reports and exercises delivered by DC 3 and GCC staff including DC 3 Organizer Desmond Cox and GCC Organizing Director Alejandro Guzman.
“We really consider this an opportunity to show delegates the hard work that is being accomplished within Teamsters District Council 3 in the area of organizing,” said Cox. “But we will also be emphasizing the importance to each of our delegates about their role in organizing within current shops of non-union bargaining unit members. There is no better way to gain leverage at the bargaining table than with 100 percent membership within our shops.” Internal organizing will be discussed with an exercise on how to best reach non-union bargaining unit members that underscores the importance of “the conversation,” with actual examples being demonstrated at worksites represented within DC3. “We look forward to an educational and productive weekend with the delegates who are the backbone and driving force for our Teamsters DC 3 membership,” said Castro. “But we are also adamant that they take this information back into our worksites and continue to build a strong solidarity movement among our membership.” PBGC Approves Funding for Detroit area Teamster Printing Trades Pension FundsWARREN, MI (April 19, 2022) – After nearly a decade of showing up at public meetings to put pressure on elected and appointed federal officials to highlight the funding needs of Teamster retiree pension funds across all industries, there is great news from the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) today as the federal agency announced the restoration of benefits for Detroit area Teamsters in plans covering GCC 2-C and 13N Detroit Area Publishers (Detroit Newspaper Union Plan).
“This is absolutely incredible news for our retirees in the Detroit area printing trades who have been fighting for restored benefits for many years,” said Teamsters District Council 3 Secretary Treasurer Israel Castro. “And a huge thank you has to be extended to the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the Biden Administration, the U.S. Congress for their passage of the Butch Lewis Act, but most importantly, our members who spoke up and fought like hell to make sure our elected officials understood the issue of retirement security.” The Butch Lewis Emergency Pension Plan Relief Act of 2021 was introduced in the United States Senate early last year and signed into law by President Joe Biden as part of the American Rescue Plan during a signing ceremony on March 11, 2021. Candidate Joe Biden made the pension funding issue one of his signature promises during the 2020 presidential campaign, and with the election of two Georgia senators in an early 2021 runoff election (Democrats Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock), President Biden had the necessary votes to leverage passage of the vital funding legislation early in his administration. “There is no doubt that our members understand and appreciate that without the help and pressure of the Teamsters, the Graphic Communications Conference (GCC), the dedication to the cause from the current administration, and the voter turnout during the last election, we would not be celebrating this huge win today,” said Castro. “We thank everyone who had a hand in making our members whole on promises made to them at the bargaining table.” Information is still being sorted through by the trustees of both pension plans, and announcements from each group will be coming in the form of mailings in the days ahead.
